English as a Second Language

The Whitestone Academy offers an outstanding English as a Second Language (ESL) program. The program is designed to meet the needs of students from entry level to advanced level of English language acquisition. The ESL program aims to prepare non-native speakers for mainstream courses, conversation, participation in school activities and prepares the students for a successful transition to life in U.S. colleges and universities.

The Whitestone Academy's ESL program extends beyond the classroom setting, and offers a variety of services for support. We have international student advisors, guidance in the college application process, test preparation services, and before and after school help sessions open to students every day.

The Whitestone Academy is fully aware of the stress and concerns that international students and their families face. We take pride in providing up to date reports, taking phone calls, and addressing any concerns that may arise with the cultural adjustment. Students are offered support by their teachers and administration to successfully become accustomed to the United States educational system as well as the boarding school life. Students who are enrolled in our program and school are a priority and we do all that we can to make sure they feel a sense of community and that their diversity is not only appreciated but accepted.

Upon enrolling at the Whitestone Academy, international students take part in an orientation to make the transition easier. During the student orientation students will take part in activities that include, speaking, writing, listening, and reading. These activities are designed to be relaxing and fun and are used to determine their proficiency in the English language. The students will then be placed in their appropriate level of ESL classes based on these series of activities.

Students will acquire academic language, conversational English, and develop their skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening comprehension. In addition to these skills students will also learn time management, technology use, test-taking strategies and research. Our teachers ensure their lessons are contemporary and use up to date technology to prepare our students for a successful transition in the world. Students use online technology daily, such as google classroom and our school portal system for homework and grading. Our students are prepared for life in colleges and universities when they leave us.
